1991: Expansion to Civil Jurisdiction

A major milestone in the Court’s development was achieved in 1991, when it was vested with civil jurisdiction. With this expansion of its jurisdiction, the institution was redesigned as the District Magistrate Court of Walasmulla, enabling it to exercise both civil and criminal jurisdiction under a unified judicial administration. This transformation significantly strengthened the Court’s ability to meet the evolving judicial needs of the community.

2022: Institutional Reorganisation

In 2022, the Court underwent a further institutional reorganisation to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of judicial administration. While the institution continues to be known as the District Magistrate Court of Walasmulla, its judicial functions are now discharged through two distinct courts. The District Judge presides over the District Court, exercising civil jurisdiction, while the Additional District Judge presides over the Magistrate’s Court, exercising criminal jurisdiction. This structure ensures the specialised and independent exercise of each jurisdiction while preserving the Court’s long-standing identity and heritage.

Over Seven Decades of Service

For more than seven decades, the District Magistrate Court of Walasmulla has remained dedicated to delivering justice with independence, integrity, impartiality, and efficiency. As an integral part of the judicial system of Sri Lanka, the Court continues to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law while providing accessible, transparent, and effective judicial services to the people of the Walasmulla Judicial Division.
